Best Plants for Kokedama
Kokedama are moss covered soil balls that are used to pot plants without the pot. You can check out how to make Kokedama at home with this video tutorial, the process is fairly easy and mainly involves wrapping a packed ball of soil in dead/preserved moss. Kokedama are trendy but can be challenging to keep alive which is why choosing a hardy plant is advantageous. You’ll also want something that doesn’t grow too quick. Once the roots of your plant start peeking out of the kokedama it’s time to make it larger. Good air humidity is crucial for Kokedama to thrive, check out our list of 4 best humidifiers for plants for humidifiers that would work great for keeping your kokedama thriving.
1 - Pothos
Pothos, also called the devil’s ivy because it stays green and thrives in the dark, is a great and resilient plant to keep indoors. These are hard to kill and take relatively little water to thrive making them good for the intermittent watering pattern with your kokedama. You can find locally at most plant stores or conveniently on Amazon through Costa Farms.
2 - Philodendron
Similar to Pothos, and sometimes confused for it, Philodendron are another hard vine like plant that does well indoors. They’re a flexible plant that can be moved in between indoor and outdoor enviroments. LIVETRENDS has a low cost 4-inch philedendron that is well packed and tends to arrive healthy.
3 - Peace Lily
Peace lilies are easy to grow, and the flowers can be a wonderful change of pace compared to other hardy plants that tend to be non-flowering like succulents, vines, ferns, etc. They need dappled/indirect sunlight and a moist environment to mimic their natural environment. Moreso than other plants these plants enjoy high humidity so consider getting a humidifier if you do decide to pick up a peace lily. It should be noted that peace lilies can be mildly toxic when ingested so keep them out of reach of children and pets! It should also be noted that while these are hardy they can grow to be a little tall which could make your kokedama unweidly or unbalanced. They’d do well for a hanging Kokedama that could be supported from all sides. You can pick up a 4-inch peace lily from Rooted on Amazon.
4 - Ferns
Ferns are another species of hardy plants that do well in warm, high humidity and low light environments. Consider a lace fern, rabbit foot fern, a boston fern, or a cretan brake fern. Some specific types of ferns are harder to find online and you’d likely have better luck tracking them down in person. If you’re looking for a super easy to maintain Kokedama that you want just for the aesthetics, a fake boston fern can be very convincing as a Kokedama. If you’re looking for a real plant going down to your local nursery or plant store and finding any hardy fern that does well indoors will likely do just fine for your Kokedama.
